UK’s famous crypto trading/exchange platform, EXMO reported being hacked. Informs that most of the hot wallets were compromised during the hack attack. Immediately suspends trading operations as well as deposits and withdrawals.
EXMO, which is a crypto trading/exchange platform based in the UK, reported that a hack attack had occurred to the exchange.
It was reported by EXMO on Monday, December 21, 2020, that it took notice of several withdrawals of huge amounts. It was informed that all these suspicious withdrawals were taking place in the hot wallets maintained with the exchange. The exchange informed that assuming that this was a hack attack, it immediately suspended trading as well as withdrawal and deposit operations.
Once the operations of the exchange were suspended, the customers of the exchange got frustrated and inquired about what was happening. Later on EXMO informed customers on its official webpage that a hack attack had caused upon the exchange. The customers were also informed that the attack targeted hot wallets. However, as an immediate measure to stop any potential threats, operations had been suspended, told exchange.
t was further informed by the exchange that thereafter the digital assets lying in hot wallets were shifted into cold wallets.
Thereafter, a complaint was lodged by the exchange in which it was alleged that a theft had occurred due to a hack attack. It has complained that at least 5% of the total digital assets under management and control of EXMO had been stolen. However, the cold wallets and/or the wallets, which were not available online, remained unharmed during this attack, informed EXMO.
Meanwhile, EXMO informed its customers that currently the incident had been internally investigated by the exchange. EXMO told its customers that hackers had managed to steal multiple digital assets including Bitcoin, Tether, XRP and Ethereum etc. Customers had now been suggested not to transfer funds in their trading accounts or wallets until the probe is concluded. The exchange also undertook to refund the digital assets to the customers which got stolen from their wallets.
The firm also reported that it took notice of the attack when it saw dumping of funds from exchange’s accounts to unknown accounts. Most of the money withdrew from the exchange was transferred from hot wallets which had huge amounts of digital assets in them. It also told that if it had not suspended the withdrawal operations, the hackers might have caused irreparable loss and damage.
The trading, deposit and withdrawal operations continue to be suspended till the time unknown.
For the time being local police in London had been put to task to investigate the hack attack. However, the police had not yet informed of any leads it had come to know of.
As per the rumours, it had been suggested that EXMO had lost 10.5 Million Dollar worth of digital coins.
